Open Office is a freely available Office Suite which includes Word Processor (writer), Spreadsheet (calc), database and presentation software

It is mature having been born out of the Sun MicroSystems Star Office Project (wikipedia) and can read and write the most popular formats including MS Office 2007's .docx formats

Over the past few years users and business have rejected / defered the upgrade to MS Windows Vista, invariably when they do, they also purchase either the OEM or Student versions of MS Office.

Schools continue to lock students into comercial products and add hundreds of dollars to the cost of educating children.

Schools have a responsibility to explore the alternatives available.

Open Office 3.0 is every bit as capable as it's commercial equivalent, and there is no valid reason it should not replace it's commercial rival in the education system.
